U.N. accord against illegal fishing

Russian officials entered into an international agreement designed to impose regulatory measures to combat unreported and unlawful fishing. The discussion of the agreement was conducted under the auspices of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, which now includes 15 countries.

Andrei Krainy, the head of Russian Fisheries Agency, was the government’s representative to sign the agreement in Rome.

Mr. Krainy noted that Russia’s decision to adhere to a comprehensive legal framework for fighting unauthorized fishing underscores the resolve of the country’s government to prevent poaching.

Signatories to the agreement include the European Union, Australia, Norway, Iceland, Brazil, as well as several nations in Africa. Of all the C.I.S. countries, the Russian Federation was the first to enter into the agreement.
