Diamond production in Russia up

According to Rosstat, the production of diamonds in Russia went up by 3.2 percent on a year-on-year basis in the first three quarters of the year. The Russian State Statistics Service calculated that diamond production decreased by 12.6 percent in October in relation to September. Still, October’s figure showed a 4.8-percent year-on-year growth. 

The production of diamonds in Russia in 2009 stood at 34.750 million carats, which was 5.9 percent lower than the figure for 2008. All but 3 percent of diamonds in Russia are mined by Alrosa. The company’s principal centers of exploration are located in the Sakha republic and in the Arkhangel’sk region.
