» “Cold War is long over”

In August of 2008, Georgia’s President Saakashvili chose to achieve his political vision through violence. It has become fashionable to view Russia’s involvement in South Ossetia through the prism of the Cold War, with the 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia as the blueprint. But such interpretations are historical folly.

Around five years ago I was interviewing one of the leaders of a business delegation from Russia at a Las Vegas tradeshow. I asked him whether any American businesspeople with Russian roots stopped by the booths of the Russian companies attending the fair and inquired about the opportunities for doing business.

In general, constructive trends in our bilateral economic cooperation sustain themselves. The volume of trade between Russia and America has increased, reaching the level of 7.5 billion dollars. By comparison, the figure for the first quarter of 2007 was only 5.2 billion dollars. The upward trend is quite remarkable.
