Millions on Earth watched in amazement as astronaut Staf-ford, a native of Weatherford, Oklahoma, opened the entry hatch of the Soyuz 19 spacecraft and shook hands with cosmonaut Alexei Leonov. The joint Soyuz-Apollo mission in 1975 was one of the first steps in ending the Cold War. For space travelers themselves, the flight turned out to be something more than successful scientific collaboration or means to a political rapprochement.

» We’re in a renaissance time

I went to law school. When I was younger I thought I wanted to be a judge. I still may want to do that someday, but I had an opportunity presented to serve in the legislature. It was not exactly what I was looking to do, but some people approached me and asked me to do it, and here I am.

We’ve had a lot of nationally significant leaders from the state really on both sides of the isle. Former Speaker Carl Albert was, of course, the presiding officer in the U.S. House of Representatives. Former Senator Don Nickles was Deputy Majority Leader. Our distinguished leaders included late Senator Robert Kerr.
