» Arms exports to grow 10% this year

The exports of Russian armaments are expected to rise in excess of 10 percent this year. The combined volume of weapons sales is forecast to reach USD 11 billion in 2011, according to the director of the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation Mr. Michail Dmitriev.

At least ten sets of foreign-made military equipment are going to be shipped to Kazan, Russia in August and September that will be installed on the Russian-made Mi-17V5 helicopters and delivered to Afghanistan pursuant to an agreement with the American Defense Department.

According to Vyacheslav Dzirkaln, deputy director for the Russian Federal Military-Technical Cooperation Service, the Russian agency is expecting to sign new contracts with the U.S. in the near future. “We are optimistic about cooperating with the United States".

The Russian Air Force and NORAD conducted Vigilant Eagle 2011 exercises in the Russian Far East from August 8 to 11, in an effort to simulate a military operation for the release of a hijacked airliner.

From July 31 to August 8, 2011, a Tupolev Tu-154-M Lk-1 plane with a group of Russian inspectors flew over the United States in accordance with the Treaty on Open Skies.  The airplane departed from the Travis Air Force Base in California.
