Thomas Stafford: Oklahoma’s own Airman of the Century

Millions on Earth watched in amazement as astronaut Staf-ford, a native of Weatherford, Oklahoma, opened the entry hatch of the Soyuz 19 spacecraft and shook hands with cosmonaut Alexei Leonov. The joint Soyuz-Apollo mission in 1975 was one of the first steps in ending the Cold War. For space travelers themselves, the flight turned out to be something more than successful scientific collaboration or means to a political rapprochement.

Blake Wade began his duties as the first Director of the Oklahoma Capitol Complex and the Centennial Commemoration Commission, a position he assumed following nine years of working as executive director of the Oklahoma Historical Society. Mr. Wade’s knowledge and experience help make Oklahoma’s centennial a celebration of a lifetime for everyone.

I first heard this legend during a Native American paw-wow festival when Indian tribes from the entire United States came to Oklahoma City. The colorful booths and displays had plenty traditional Native American artifacts, souvenirs, and paintings.
