Documents justifying Russia’s right to the continental shelf in the arctic beyond the 200-mile coastal zone, will be produced within the next two years, announced the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich at a press briefing on February 8, 2013. In the near future, Russia expects to send to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf a submission in regards to the central part of the Okhotsk Sea. In the next year or two, Russia will present documents and studies covering the entire arctic continental shelf. As noted by Mr. Lukashevich, special justification is needed only as to the rights to parts of the shelf beyond the 200-mile coastal zone. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said that Russia’s ownership of the shelf within the 200-mile zone cannot be questioned.
