WTO accession does not mean abandoning the policy of supporting the national economy, said Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting of the State Security Council in an expanded format. As the press service of the President stated, the main topic of the meeting was to develop measures to ensure national security and the protection of Russian economic interests in the initial phase of the Russian economy’s integration into the World Trade Organization. Speaking at the meeting, Vladimir Putin said that the initial phase of WTO integration will require serious adaptation of the Russian economy and a new level of competition, as well as a higher degree of openness on the part of the national market. In the short term, there may be some difficulties, especially now that the global economic growth slowed. The government should develop an action plan for the transition of the various sectors of the economy to the conditions of Russia’s membership in the WTO, the President said. In his opinion, it is necessary to take seriously the established institutional framework and mechanisms for the protection and promotion of Russian interests, including within the body for dispute resolution in the WTO. In turn, the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Industry, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take measures that will eliminate any discriminatory sanctions against Russian producers.
