Sakhalin prioritizes exports

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from Sakhalin increased 21.6 percent since last year. From the beginning of 2013, the Sakhalin-2 project exported more than 10 million tons of LNG, worth more than USD4.8 billion.

Aside from LNG, coal and marine bioresources are among the main items exported from Sakhalin. More than two million tons of coal were exported with the value of USD113 million, as well as 156,000 tons of marine bioresources with the cumulative value of USD309 million. The volume of coal exports in 2013 increased by 25 percent in relation to the figure seen during the previous year. Exports of bioresources went up by 1.3 percent since last year. The value of products exported from Sakhalin increased by 17 percent to USD5.7 billion, while the physical weight of the exports went up by 20 percent to 13 million tons. LNG takes 85.3 percent of the region’s exports and bioresources comprise 5.5 percent. Japan receives nearly 85 percent of all exports from Sakhalin, while South Korea gets 5.5 percent and China takes in another 3.5 percent.

The foreign trade turnover for the Sakhalin region increased by 14.4 percent compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. It is now calculated to stand at USD7.1 billion. Sakhalin established business ties with 102 countries of the world. Japan is the biggest of the region’s partners, as it accounts for nearly 69 percent of the region’s traded goods. The United States holds a 3.7-percent share in the Sakhalin region’s foreign trade.

The region’s imports have been assessed at USD1.4 billion and consisted of 414,520 tons of merchandise. The weight of the imports went up by 12.5 percent and the value of the goods traded increased by 3.7 percent in relation to the corresponding period of 2012. The ships imported from Finland accounted for 19.5 percent of total regional imports. The value of the boats was USD278.79 million. The U.S. supplied nearly 17 percent of imports, which consisted of engineering products, metals, and metal components. Norway supplied marine ships worth USD137.94, a figure that comprised 11.6 percent of the overall imports. The United Arab Emirates supplied seismic survey vessels with the value of USD164.52 million.

The goods supplied to Sakhalin within the framework of the Production Sharing Agreement projects offshore generated 77 percent of the region’s foreign trade. Specifically, these products accounted for 43.5 percent of imports and 90 percent of the region’s exports by value. Most exports were in the form of liquefied natural gas, according to the Russian Customs Service. Total LNG shipments were 10.2 million tons, with the value of USD5.8 billion.
