Small airlines to be banned

Russia’s Transport Ministry has proposed granting the license to make long-distance flights until 2014 only to the carriers which operate at least eight aircraft seating more than 55 passengers.

“We suggest that this requirement be a temporary measure, until the introduction of the IOSA standards certificate adapted to Russian air carriers,” Deputy Transport Minister Valery Okulov told the media.

Russian airlines operating international and long-distance flights will have to obtain an IOSA certificate in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Other air carriers are to get the document a year later. Hence, the proposed restrictions will be applicable until 2014, Okulov noted.
