Capacity of Ezminskaya Hydroelectric Station Boosted to 60 MW

On March 1, 2024, the capacity of the Ezminskaya Hydroelectric Power Station in North Ossetia was significantly increased by 15 MW, reaching a total of 60 MW. This enhancement was achieved through the replacement of all three hydraulic units at the station with modern, more efficient equipment, as part of RusHydro’s Comprehensive Modernization Program (CMP). The modernization process included the installation of new hydraulic turbines, generators, pre-turbine disk valves, control systems, and auxiliary equipment.

The new hydraulic units underwent comprehensive load tests for 72 hours, confirming their design characteristics and enabling an official increase in the station’s power capacity. The Ezminskaya Hydroelectric Power Station, which is poised to celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2024, is undergoing a large-scale reconstruction project that includes not only the replacement of equipment but also the repair of hydraulic structures. This project is nearing completion, with all works expected to be finalized by May 2024.

JSC Gidroremont-VKK, a subsidiary of RusHydro, serves as the general contractor for the station’s modernization. The Ezminskaya Hydroelectric Power Station, located on the Terek River, is the second-most powerful plant in North Ossetia, featuring a main water intake unit, a 7.8 km long diversion tunnel, and a hydroelectric power station building.

This modernization effort is part of RusHydro’s broader initiative to overhaul its hydro-generating facilities, aiming to replace or refurbish turbines, generators, transformers, and other equipment across its portfolio. Over the past 12 years, the Comprehensive Modernization Program has led to a total increase in installed capacity of 613 MW across RusHydro’s hydroelectric power stations, equivalent to adding another large hydroelectric power station to the energy holding’s assets.
