According to a report by the Association of Internet Commerce Companies (AKIT), the turnover of e-commerce in Russia saw a significant increase of almost 30% in 2022 compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 4.98 trillion rubles. The AKIT predicts that such growth rates may continue in 2023, provided that there are no critical changes in market conditions, such as currency fluctuations. The association believes that 25-30% has become an annual sustainable growth rate in Russian e-commerce.
The report also indicates that the share of e-commerce in total retail sales has increased by 2.4 percentage points over the year, making up 11.6%. It is noteworthy that the share of online sales in non-food retail is significantly higher than in food retail, amounting to 19.9% and 3.1%, respectively. Furthermore, the share of cross-border trade has decreased by 9.4 percentage points to 3.6% over the year.
As for the products that are purchased online, the report does not provide specific details. However, it is safe to assume that a wide range of goods and services are bought through e-commerce platforms, including electronics, clothing, household items, groceries, and more. The growth of e-commerce in Russia reflects the increasing trend of consumers shifting to online shopping, which has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Most of the online purchases (over 75%) in Russia are still made up of the top five products, with the ranking remaining almost unchanged for the third year. The most popular product category is electronics and household appliances, which account for 22% of total sales. It is followed by furniture and household goods (18.3%), clothing and footwear (14.5%), food (13.2%), and health and beauty products (7.7%).
In 2022, the most notable increase in demand was observed in the following categories: jewelry and watches (up 3.3 times), tools and garden equipment (up three times), accessories (up 94%), sports goods (up 90%), and pet stores (up 76%).
Regarding the leading regions in online demand, Voronezh appeared in the top 10 regions, outpacing Samara and Krasnoyarsk while outranking Tatarstan, which was in the top 10 in previous years. Moscow accounts for 19.4% of the total purchases, followed by the Moscow region (10.7%), St. Petersburg (7%), Krasnodar krai (4.7%), Rostov region (2.6%), Sverdlovsk region (2.6%), Nizhny Novgorod region (2.1%), Voronezh region (2%), Samara region (2%), and Krasnoyarsk region (1.8%).
