National Space Center: preparatory work is finished

The main part of the preparatory work for the construction of the National Space Center has been completed, said Yuri Kravtsov, general director of Mosinzhproekt, on September 24, 2020.

“In the preparatory phase, construction site organization, felling, the dismantling of existing technical networks, and the installation of reinforced concrete structures, as well as technical investigations were carried out,” said Kravtsov.

The general director also pointed out that during this phase, some 97 thousand cubic meters of soil has been completely removed during excavation activities, and preparations for the construction of a high-rise building, an assembly-type building, as well as other facilities have begun.

The next stage of the work is the construction of the monolithic structures of the basement and the upper floors of the National Space Center buildings.

“The works will be carried out on schedule and in compliance with all necessary safety requirements at the site,” Yuri Kravtsov stressed.

The general manager of Mosinzhproekt said that about 720 construction workers and 27 units of machinery were operating in two shifts at the construction site.

“We are committed to making the construction site of the future National Space Center an example of a modern approach to construction. The highest standards of occupational safety, health, and environmental protection are applied to ensure that the construction process has no negative impact on the life of the city and its citizens. Particular attention will also be paid to improving the social and living conditions of the workers involved in the construction of the plant to provide them with safe working conditions. At the company’s expense, three hot meals per day were provided for the workers and travel compensation was given to the staff. As part of the efficiency improvement program, measures were developed to train and certify production staff. There is no doubt that the National Space Center, which will be constructed for the state corporation Roscosmos based at the Khrunichev Center, will become an outstanding architectural achievement not only for our company Mosinzhproekt, but also for Moscow and the entire country,” Mr. Kravtsov concluded.

The National Space Center (NSC) will be built on a 6.9-hectare site on the territory of the Khrunichev Center. It will house the Central Office and the Joint Industrial Information Center of the state conglomerate Roscosmos, the headquarters of many industrial organizations, an industrial bank, an education center, a congress hall, an exhibition center, and a center for production diversification.

The total area of the NSC buildings will exceed 250,000 square meters.

The National Space Center project will create jobs for around 20,000 people, including engineers and construction workers from companies in the sector, as well as teachers and students from the flagship universities and the residents of the Industrial Technopark.

The architectural appearance of the building complex of the National Space Center was determined in July 2019 based on the results of a competition for an architectural and urban concept. The competition committee consisted of representatives of the state conglomerate Roscosmos and the Moscow government.

The concept selected for the project was based on the idea of creating a structure of blocks adjacent to a common axis – a covered pedestrian gallery. The tower in the eastern part of the site is triangular; the tower dominating the site is 288 meters high. There will also be a bell tower.
