Rostelecom opens easternmost data center in Sakhalin

Rostelecom PJSC, the largest integrated provider of digital services in Russia, announced the opening of a new data center in the South Sakhalin city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on September 18, 2020.

The new data center will ensure stable and seamless operation of the data processing and storage facilities, as well as protected communication channels for data exchange. The initial total capacity is expected to be 1.5 MW and 25 racks (with the potential to be extended to 180 racks). The data center has proven to be reliable with uninterruptible power supply and conditioning and is equipped with all necessary fire alarm and protection systems.

To ensure the highest reliability of data transmission, the new center connects to the mainland on three reservation levels via a high-speed backbone communication line. This is particularly important for high-impact digital projects in the Far East, such as Digital Region, Smart City, and Safe City, which provide intellectual video surveillance and analysis services, and other projects.

Valery Limarenko, the Governor of the Sakhalin oblast, said, “The commissioning of Rostelecom’s data center is an important step on the path to digital transformation that the entire region is currently undergoing. All our cornerstone projects in urban infrastructure, maritime transport and logistics, R&D, and healthcare require intelligent storage and transmission capacity for the data that this new center will provide. It is important that this new facility should become a central data processing hub serving the whole of Russia’s Far East, which is why it was opened in Sakhalin.”

Igor Zimin, vice president for applied projects at Rostelecom stated, “The global digital economy cannot function properly without a reliable data cycle that includes the capture, storage, and processing of big data. Data centers are therefore essential for the sustainable functioning of government and business in the current environment. Our first turnkey industrial data center will not only become a reliable partner for the government and corporate customers in the Sakhalin region, but will also connect other regions in the Far East that can use its resources.”
