From January to October, rail output in Russia increased by 34.1 percent year-on-year, to 991.5 thousand tons, mostly due to the increase in purchases by the Russian Railways (RZhD).
By 2030, RZhD plans to construct 13.8 thousand kilometers of heavy-weight transportation railroads, as well as 10.5 thousand kilometers of high-speed railroads, which in its turn will increase cargo transportation 1.5-fold. The passenger turnover is expected to increase by 60 percent. Investments in the project are estimated at around RUB12.6 trillion (USD210 billion).
Evraz and Mechel put new rail mills into operation and started producing 100-meter rails, which previously had to be imported. In 2015, the average rail price grew by 28.5 percent year-on-year. From January to October 2016, the increase stood at 6.8 percent year-on-year for a total of RUB32.2 thousand (USD530) per one kilometer. In value terms, the total rail output this year will stand at RUB29.4 billion (USD480 million), which would constitute a 43-percent increase.
