X5 Retail’s net profit up 57.3% in 2016

The IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) net profit of X5 Retail for 2016 increased some 57.3 percent to RUB22.291 billion (USD396 million) from RUB14.174 billion (USD251 million) reported in the previous year, the company announced on March 28, 2017.

 

Revenues increased by 27.8 percent to RUB1.033 trillion (USD18.353 billion) from RUB808.818 billion (USD14.370 billion), and gross profits rose by 26 percent to RUB249.985 billion (USD4.441 billion) from RUB198.39 billion (USD3.525 billion). The entity’s adjusted EBITDA went up by 33.8 percent to RUB79.519 billion (USD1.413 billion) from RUB59.413 billion (USD1.055 billion).

 

X5 Retail is the biggest retailer in Russia by sales. The company operates stores under various brands, including the Pyaterochka soft discount stores, the Perekrestok supermarkets, and the Karusel hypermarkets, along with other smaller outlets.

 

Pyaterochka acquired Perekrestok in May 2006, leading to the emergence of Russia’s biggest grocery retailer. X5 acquired the Karusel hypermarket chain in June 2008. The retailer finalized its merger with the Kopeyka discount chain in 2010.

 

Altogether, the company operates 9,187 outlets in Moscow and St. Petersburg. It has a substantial presence in Russia’s other regions as well, especially in the European part. The company has a total of 8,363 Pyaterochka stores, 539 Perekrestok supermarkets, 91 Karusel hypermarkets, and 194 Express stores. The retailer also manages 35 distribution centers with over 2,300 trucks.

 

As of January 24, 2017, the shareholder structure of X5 Retail included the Alfa Group with a 47.86-percent stake, the Pyaterochka founders with a 14.43-percent stake, and the X5 directors with a 0.06-percent stake. 37.64 percent of the stock was in free-float.

 

In 2016, X5 Retail revenues from the Pyaterochka chain increased by 32.5 percent to RUB775.58 billion (USD13.784 billion) from RUB585.402 billion (USD10.400 billion), while the revenue from the Perekrestok business rose by 19.4 percent to RUB155.404 billion (USD2.762 billion) from RUB130.144 billion (USD2.312 billion). The revenue from the Karusel chain went up by 7.9 percent to RUB83.558 billion (USD1.485 billion) from RUB77.443 billion (USD1.376 billion).
