On November 9, 2016, the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill congratulated Donald Trump on being elected the 45th President of the United States and expressed hope for the development of good relations between the United States and the Russian Orthodox Church.
“Heartfelt congratulations on your election as the President of the United States of America. The choice of American people indicates that the people trust you highly and hope that you will be developing the country and bringing changes to domestic policy and international relations. I hope that the long-standing relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the United States will continue for the benefit of our peoples united by a common history and Christian values,” Patriarch Kirill said, as quoted by the press service of the Russian Orthodox Church.
According to the Patriarch, the United States plays an important role in solving modern challenges, including the fight against terrorism and the protection of fundamental moral values.
