Public sentiment towards the United States improved in recent weeks in Russia, as the Republican candidate Donald Trump went on to win the presidency, according to a survey by the independent Levada pollster.
Coinciding with Mr. Trump’s election victory, the number of Russians relating positively to the U.S. increased from 19 percent in September to 28 percent in November.
At the same time, the negative attitudes remained high, with 56 percent of those surveyed relating negatively to the U.S. Nonetheless, that figure has also seen improvement, as it went down from 64 percent in September and 70 percent in May.
Half of those surveyed believe that relations with the U.S. will improve with Mr. Trump in office, while only two percent expect a deterioration.
Notably, 78 percent of the poll’s participants believe that the choice of the U.S. president has an effect on the lives of Russians, while 16 percent disagreed with that assertion.
